Miami real estate developer to join Miami Dolphins team

July 3rd, 2009

First, it was Jimmy Buffett.

Then, Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

Now, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is adding prominent Miami real estate developer Jorge Perez, his close friend and longtime business partner, to the team’s lineup.

The Dolphins said Wednesday that Perez will be hired as one of the team’s vice chairmen, joining Don Shula with that title.

You got the look?

Don’t say we never told you about a chance to win a modeling contest.

Britney and Miley alive and well

June 30th, 2009

As if we don’t have enough real celebrity deaths — Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon and Billy Mays — now we’re hearing about fake ones.

Hackers have broadcast bogus information about celebrities including Britney Spears, Jeff Goldblum and Ellen DeGeneres after breaking into their Twitpic accounts.

The Internet messaging system shut down part of its service after the hacking was discovered Sunday because of what the company described as a “vulnerability.”

Leaner healthier Ronnie Brown: I think I am more explosive

June 30th, 2009

Ronnie Brown knows that a year ago he was ahead of where he should be in recovering from a torn knee ligament. What ensued was the Miami Dolphins running back’s first Pro Bowl season, albeit with statistics somewhere between mundane and magnificent.

So, compared to last year, Brown was asked, do you feel, stronger, faster or shiftier?

”All of the above,” he laughed confidently.

An artful gift to the South Florida landscape

June 30th, 2009

At a time when most art institutions are cutting costs, collectors Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz are adding another significant player to the Miami art scene — a long-anticipated warehouse space in the Design District to showcase their world-class collection of contemporary art.

The de la Cruzes hope to open the museum-like structure, under construction on 41st Street at North Miami Avenue, to the public during Art Basel Miami Beach in December.

Miami Dolphins young players getting support from veterans

June 15th, 2009

As the Dolphins’ second-team defense lined up for another snap in team drills, 2009 first-round pick Vontae Davis dropped 10 yards off his receiver from his cornerback position. Knowing that is too much cushion for off-the-line pushing, veteran cornerback Will Allen’s voice slashed the air.

“Vontae! Press, press, press!”

Davis hustled up to get in the receiver’s face. Few people can get Davis’ attention these days the way Allen can. The way Allen has taken an older-brother interest in Davis and Sean Smith, the cornerback Miami drafted in the second round, typifies the guidance expected from its veterans toward young players.

This is a pajama party now, not a Super Bowl party

June 15th, 2009

The best quote of this Dolphins offseason comes courtesy of sage linebacker Jason Taylor. It is the most telling analysis of the state of the team as minicamp ended Sunday, wrapping up Miami’s preparation before the start of training camp in late July.

”We look good in pajamas,” Taylor said.

He meant the shorts and practice jerseys that pass as NFL uniforms this time of year.

Soul singer tops charts on 2nd try

June 11th, 2009

Chrisette Michele’s sophomore CD, Epiphany, recently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this month, a big feat for the budding soul singer. But the accomplishment came with a backhanded slap. The same reports that mention her topping the charts also note that the 83,000 in sales for Epiphany were the lowest sales numbers ever for a CD debuting at No. 1 in the 18-year history of Soundscan. Michele lets out a hearty laugh when that comes up during an interview.

”I’m so proud,” Michele says. “My first album (I Am in 2007) debuted at No. 29 and sold under 27,000 copies the first week. Eighty-three thousand copies is three times the amount the first time I came out. For someone else, 83,000 may not be a lot, but for me doing this underground neo-soul thing, this is incredible.”

Age is just a number for Kim Alexis

June 11th, 2009

Age doesn’t mean a thing to Kim Alexis.
And why should it? At 48 (49 next month), the ’80s-era supermodel is still smoking hot.
In brilliant casting, Alexis is the host of TV Land’s second season of She’s Got the Look, the model-search reality show for the over-35 set.

Try not to be too envious — her looks are all natural.
”I’ve never had plastic surgery,” says the mother of three from her home in northern New Jersey (husband is former NHL hockey player Ron Duguay). “I haven’t had people cut into my face.”
Botox injections are out of the question, too.
