Miami Half Moon Empanadas

Here’s this week’s Miami.com scouting report:
The idea for Miami Beach’s Half Moon Empanadas (named for the shape of South American turnover) came to Juan Zavala Jr. on a trip home to Argentina. When a vote was taken at a family gathering on whether to order pizzas or empanadas, he realized there wasn’t a place in Miami that delivered the latter.

”And that’s how Half Moon Empanadas started,” says his Mexico-born wife and business partner, Pilar Guzmán-Zavala. “With the simplest of ideas.”

The couple offers empanadas stuffed with beef, chicken, ham, corn, onion, broccoli and cheese plus pasteles (sweet pastries), soft drinks and coffee.

Options range from three empanadas with potato chips and a beverage for $6.99 to two dozen empanadas for $29.99. If you’re not in the delivery zone (basically from 41st Street south), takeout and eating in are options.

Place: Half Moon Empanadas.

Address: 1616 Washington Ave., Miami Beach.

Contact: 305-532-5277, halfmoonempanadas.com.

Hours: 11 a.m.-11 p.m. daily.
