Miami Book Fair International heats up

Book lovers will take to the streets Friday with the opening of the street fair of the 25th annual Miami Book Fair International. And if you’re an experienced fairgoer, you’re not worried. You know the drill.

You plan your day. Or days. Why go just once when there are hundreds of authors Saturday and Sunday? You wear comfortable shoes, because you know you’ll be browsing the booths for sales. And you bring a tote bag — or buy one — because you know you won’t be able to resist a bargain.

You look at the schedule of authors, and you make the hard decisions. Dennis Lehane and his highly praised historical novel The Given Day or Naomi Klein and the economics and politics of The Shock Doctrine? Novelists Sandra Cisneros and Cristina Garcia or journalists on the Iraq War? Oprah-sanctioned David Wroblewski and his The Story of Edgar Sawtelle or former Clinton advisor Vernon Jordan? Someday we’ll be able to clone ourselves, but for now, we must sigh and choose.

Fair newcomers, however, may not quite comprehend the sheer number of things to do. Here are some of the fair’s best bets.
