Bill Clinton to speak in Miami Beach at King Memorial fundraiser
Former President Bill Clinton will be the keynote speaker at a ”Dream Dinner in Miami” on Thursday night to benefit the building of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which has donated $1 million to the memorial, will host the dinner at the newly renovated Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach. The Memorial Project Foundation has already raised $102 million out of the needed $120 million.
A 28-foot statue, which depicts King emerging from a mountain of granite, will be the centerpiece of a four-acre memorial on the National Mall’s tidal basin — adjacent to the Franklin Roosevelt memorial and halfway between the memorials to Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.
Clinton, who signed a congressional resolution in 1998 authorizing the memorial and has actively campaigned for it, will receive the King Memorial Foundation’s humanitarian award.
