Cuban Exile s Plan for a Ferry From Miami to Havana Is Awaiting U.S. Approval
There is a recent development in Miami news, particularly for its Cuban population, that is very interesting to follow: a Ferry service from Miami to Cuba could very well become a reality. Amando Ruiz is making Miami news as he waits for approval from the Obama Administration, who recently, in an effort to increase contact with the island, granted Cuban-Americans the right to make the trip to the Island without restrictions and allowed money and gifts to be sent in greater quantities as well. Ruiz suggests that this project would go a long way in helping the Cuban people.
The Administration is finding itself pressured to speed up in normalizing the relations with Cuba. Cuban officials, members of Congress and travel companies in the U.S.A are requesting the removal of the travel interdictions for all Americans in regards to Cuba. This would be a huge step for normalizing the relationship between the two countries.
Right now, only several charter companies are offering plain services directly to Cuba from different destinations in the U.S.A. As a result of very little competition, traveling to the island is expensive with elevated plane fares. In essence, Amando Ruiz’s sees his services as an alternative to flying which would help solidify the relationship between the two countries.
Ruiz believes that Obama cannot help the Cuban people, as he has said he wants to, without his ferry services. His services are an alternative for those who have a smaller amount of money, more gifts to bring to the island, or are unable to fly for whatever reason. Ruiz imagines the possibilities as someone on his ferry could carry four times as much luggage as he would be allowed to bring on a plane, allowing for so much more to be donated to the needy Cuban people.
Some say that his dream might stay a dream if the Cuban government fails to cooperate; however, Ruiz believes that the main obstacle or hold up is the U.S government. Mr Ruiz is left waiting anxiously for the approval of his project. It would be great Miami news to know that this city was offering ground breaking services to its Cubans here in Miami and back on the island.
