Federal forecasters today boosted their predictions for the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is now calling for 14-18 named storms, including seven to 10 hurricanes, with three to six of those being intense with winds greater than 110 mph.

Depending on its strength and location, the Bermuda High, an expanse of high pressure over the Atlantic, is one of the major atmospheric factors that can steer tropical systems toward South Florida or push them away.
