Miami-Dade Hotel Taxes Plummet

Friday, August 28th, 2009

June 2009 brought an 18 percent drop in Miami-Dade hotel taxes. This drop resembles that of the 16.8 percent decline in the 12 months following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

This drop in hotel taxes further complicates the county’s efforts to finance a new baseball stadium for the Florida Marlins. The county is securing future hotel taxes for the nearly $400 million of construction debt they plan to incur. The steep hotel tax decline has forced county officials to rewrite the stadium’s financing plan. The stadium’s future is dependent on the hotel market’s success over the next two years.

2009 Miami Boat Show & Coconut Grove Art Fair Preliminary Analysis

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

The 2009 Miami Boat Show and the Coconut Grove Art Fair preliminary analysis!

The Miami boat show and Coconut Grove Art Fair Miami events are over and out and it is now time to analyze their success and see how they fared as compared to the way the Miami city guide normally describes them. It is too soon to draw an accurate analysis of the Miami events but a few trends emerged and are worth noting.

2009 Coconut Grove Art Fair

Judging by the amount of people walking the streets, this major Miami event was well attended. Attendance was high with more than 150,000 visitors. The results, as far as the amount of business conducted, is a totally different story. The crisis is definitely here and the drastic decrease in Miami events sales serves as proof.

2009 Miami Boat Show

Attendance was definitely down compared to last year’s show. Plenty of locals attended the Miami events show but international visitors were scarce. According to the Miami city guide, people normally come from far and wide to the Miami Boat Show. Miami Beach hotels did not get booked to full capacity as they normally do. The Miami city guide has noted that in past years, hotels in Miami were at full occupancy at full rate prices. We are in a crisis and it shows. People are just not in the mood. On average, the Miami Boat show Miami event attracts around 140,000 visitors per year. This year’s final count will surely show lower numbers. Travel agencies booking the Miami events boat show indicated that business went down 30% as compared to last year. However, sales will not be as weak as once thought before the Miami event took place. It seems that there was some action in the smaller segment of the market and the super luxury yacht segment. Aside from that, everything else buyers could not resist the Miami events incredible deals offered.
